Episode Fourteen – Visual Programming

On Thursday, June 24th, 2021 Episode Fourteen of the BILT Academy Podcast went live.

Before we get into this month’s podcast, we want to celebrate our first year 1 year of Podcasting, and to begin year two with this month’s Episode 14.  We also would like to thank BIM Track for coming on board for another year as our official Podcast Technology  Support. Thank you!

Our fourteenth has been curated by our BILT Academy correspondent David. This month’s podcast is a BIM Technology podcast, and in it, David interviews two industry experts about coding and more specifically visual programing.

A quick soundbite of what is ahead in this episode

In this month’s episode, with coding becoming more and more part of a daily workflow for practitioners in the built environment we decided to take a deeper dive. We found that for a variety of reasons such as to automate repetitive tasks or to overcome any complex surfaces, coding is becoming more and more popular in the AEC industry. With this in mind, David was wondering what visual programming tools are out there and which ones are most commonly used and, in this podcast, we highlight 2 of those, namely Dynamo and Grasshopper.

Here are this month’s interviewees:

Jostein Olsen is a BIM specialist at Sweco. Here he has gathered close to 15 years of experience in the AEC industry working on everything from small scale industrial projects to large infrastructure projects. He has a wide experience with practical BIM workflows and has dug deep into the wonderful world of Dynamo. He has a passion for finding the practical middle ground between the BIM-idealists and the more conservative forces in the industry and thinks Visual programming software closes that gap.

Luis uses programming to collaborate with practitioners in diverse fields such as design, fashion, and gastronomy. Luis developed diverse interests and skills during his academic training as an architect and realized that the programming he was learning and applying to generate novel building solutions could also serve to create new ways of working in other disciplines.

These collaborations have led to developing projects such as Robots in Gastronomy, where he developed a 3d Food Printing machine and various interfaces by which chefs could digitally design and produce edible 3d models. Luis has also worked in fashion technology, developing garments with wearable technology and software to aid in the bespoke design of garments. These projects were developed with long-time collaborator and partner, Elizabeth Bigger. Elizabeth and Luis run Datable, a studio dedicated to the fusion of tradition and technology.

Luis has practiced architecture, seeing several projects fully constructed in Spain and Lebanon. Luis’s programming and architectural experience and passion for collaboration led him to start teaching in 2007, and to date, has taught courses and workshops in Europe, Asia, North America, and Africa. Luis has been faculty at the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia for 12 years. Luis’ publications can be found in various conference proceedings and printed books

Luis is currently a developer and 3rd party developer supporter at McNeel Europe S.L. with a mission to help people create great things with the APIs developed for Rhinoceros 3d and Grasshopper 3d. In addition to this role, Luis initiated and manages McNeel Europe’s participation in EU Funded research projects including Innochain, V4Design, MindSpaces, and Ecolopes
