Before we getting into the show notes for the episode a few announcements: First we are happy to announce that BILT goes globally virtual from June 22nd until 24th, 2021! Our Twelfth episode has been curated by our BILT Academy correspondent Julia.  This is the first of a two-part podcast series on sustainability. This month’s part one has Julia interviewing a leader in sustainability and climate adaptation.

Those outside of the EU might not be aware, that the European Green Deal is the ambitious EU climate policy that aims to be the first climate neutral continent by the year 2050! 

This requires a fundamental transformation of our energy system and for the general building industry. For this Episode, I teamed up with Willy Spanjer who will tell us how the Technical University of Delft, in the Netherlands aims to contribute towards these ambitious European goals.

Willy Spanjer is the Project Manager for Sustainable Building & Climate Adaptation at The Green Village. Within these themes, she works with various parties who want to test, validate and demonstrate their innovations in their field lab. By doing so, bottlenecks can be detected and solved, while innovations scale up to practice faster. With a Master’s in Industrial Ecology, Willy has been with The Green Village since the very beginning, seeing successful innovations realized in the outside world. 

• What is the Green Village exactly? The Green Village is a field lab for sustainable innovation in the urban environment.

A sustainable future requires innovative ideas and new applicable methods and techniques. At The Green Village, knowledge- and educational institutions, entrepreneurs, government bodies and civilians can research, expEriment, validate and demonstrate their sustainable innovations. This field lab at the campus of Delft University of Technology focuses on the urban environment where you can test on neighborhood -, street – and building level. The Green Village is a place where people can live, work and learn, exempt of standard rules and regulations. With access to the “innovation ecosystem” of the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, science is literally around the corner. 
 
By paying attention to technical, corporate, social and policy-based challenges, they help innovative parties accelerate from theory to practice. These challenges are divided into three themes: Sustainable building and renovation, Future energy system and Climate adaptive city.

On Thursday, March 25th, 2021 Episode Eleven of the BILT Academy Podcast went live.

Our Eleventh episode has been curated by our BILT Academy correspondent Daniel.  This is the second of a two-part podcast series on Robotics. This month’s part two has Daniel interviewing two leading researchers in the field of robotics and its future.

A few years back, Daniel had the privilege of holding an internship position at Fraunhofer Italia where he got to meet inspiring researchers on the cutting edge of technology. In this episode, we meet two leading PhD researchers of esteemed Fraunhofer Italia who will tell us more about the future of robotics in construction and how this will impact us in how we work.

• Camilla Follini is a researcher of the Process Engineering in Construction (PEC) team at Fraunhofer Italia.

Camilla Follini is a researcher of the Process Engineering in Construction (PEC) team at FhI. She received a Master’s Degree in Architecture at the Polytechnical University of Milan and a Master’s Degree in Advanced Construction and Building Technology at the Technical University of Munich. Her Master thesis was developed in collaboration with KEWAZO, a start-up developing a robotic system to automate scaffolding logistics and assembly. She is currently a PhD student in Advanced-Systems Engineering at the Free University of Bolzano, where she is deepening her research on bridging the gap between robotics and the construction site.

• Michael Terzer is a researcher of the Robotics & Intelligent Systems Engineering (RISE) team at Fraunhofer Italia.

Michael Terzer is a researcher of the Robotics & Intelligent Systems Engineering (RISE) team at FhI. He concluded his Master Studies 2017 in Mechatronics & Smart Technologies at Innsbruck /AT. Before he started to work at Fraunhofer Italia, he gathered various insights into different Industries through internships and part time jobs. Since 2018 he is working as Scientific Collaborator at Fraunhofer Italia. His main research topics cover Advanced Robotics Hardware & Software Development, Flexible Production, Precision Agriculture and Open Source Robotics Software Development.

Our Tenth episode has been curated by our BILT Academy correspondent David.  This is the first of a two-part podcast series on Robotics. This month’s part one has David interviewing two industry experts about the future of robotics.

This month we kick off a series of podcasts where robotics take center stage. This episode focuses on the future of robotics, with the future being us, the next generation of the building industry. We invited a senior lecturer for robotics and a student graduating on this topic to give some insights on how robotics is currently taught and studied. As well as asking them to share their predictions of how the increasing demand for automation will change the curriculum of architects and engineers of the future.

• Boris Bähre is an Architect, Teacher and Curriculum Development at Hanze University of Applied Sciences in Groningen

Boris is an architect, lecturer, consultant and physical programmer. After working for various architectural firms, he co-founded Spine Architects in Hamburg in 2005. 

In the course of many years of teaching assignments at various colleges and universities (including RWTH Aachen, TH Kassel, TH Cologne in Germany and TU Delft in the Netherlands), Boris Bähre was intensively involved in research and BIM teaching in Master’s and Bachelor’s programs. 

 His university activities focus on the ‘socio-technical’ aspect of integrative methods and the introduction of combining techniques in teaching. In his current position at the Hanze University of Applied Sciences in Groningen – Boris is currently in charge of development, coordination and teaching within the new minor: Built Digital. 

One main focus of his current work is the introduction of: 

“Automation fabrication in teaching – implementing a live and hands-on training of physical programming and Cobot Robotica” 

• Anthony Meijer is a student for Built Environment at the Hanze University of Applied Sciences in Groningen

Anthony is a student for Built Environment at the Hanze University of Applied Sciences in Groningen. Anthony already acquired quite some experience in Robotics, sensor technology and AI and currently works at Visser & Smit Bouw Groningen a VolkerWessels company to graduate in Built Environment. For his bachelor, Anthony is researching possibilities in how a contractor can make use of Robotics and AI in the near future.

On December 30th Episode Eight of the BILT Academy Podcast went live.

She also enjoys riding her motorcycle, meeting up with friends (as far as possible in the current lockdown conditions), and reading a good book.

On Thursday, December 17th Episode Seven of the BILT Academy Podcast went live.

Our Seventh episode has been curated by our BILT Academy correspondent Daniel. This month’s podcast is an academic podcast, and in it, Daniel interviews two industry experts about the topic of AI or Artificial Intelligence in design.

This month we take a deep dive into deep-learning in Geometry. As Artificial Intelligence becomes more and more relevant as early as in design phases. We explore in this episode how Artificial Intelligence not only currently is researched but how it is already in use and how the building industry benefits from this progress. Daniel had the pleasure of teaming up with two passionate and brilliant building industry experts and researchers already creating a large impact on their researches and practical approaches. 

• Alberti Tono a geometric deep learning researcher.

Alberto is the president of the Computational Design Institute. He is currently exploring ways in which the Convergence between Digital and Humanities can facilitate cross-pollination between different industries within an Ethical Framework. 

He served as the Research and Computational Design Leader in Architectural and Engineering organizations, receiving the O1-visa for outstanding abilities with HOK and HDR. Tono obtained his Masters in Building Engineering – Architecture from the University of Padua and the Harbin Institute of Technology. He has been working in the computational design and deep learning space since 2014. Furthermore, he is focused on the improvement of Building Information Modeling and Virtual Design and Construction (BIM/VDC) workflows with a statistical approach to reduce the impact that these processes have on our Planet. Hence, Tono is LEED AP certified, and he is completing a MicroMasters Program in Statistics and Data Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology X. He is an international multi-award-winning “hacker” and speaker, and his work within Architecture and Artificial Intelligence brought him to companies in China, the Netherlands, Italy, and California. 

He is devoting his life for Hannah Tono’s happiness. Since they both are passionate about new technologies, he developed an augmented reality wedding proposal. Together they run a program called Dreamship to help Pediatric Palliative Care Hospices adopt immersive technologies through research. 

• Alessio Grancini working in the Advanced Technology Department – Unity Development for Morphosis

Alessio Grancini is a prototype engineer for immersive realities.  

He is interested in how Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality meet private and public spaces,  infrastructuring the interfaces of the future.  

His research starts from the gaming industry. After working on a Virtual Reality game named “VR Reefrescue”, educational multiplayer experience by Super 78 Studios, he produces a number of freelance projects for the AEC industry and Entertainment industry.  

Working at Morphosis Architects, as a Unity Developer, his work at Milan Design Week 2019, features a multiplayer augmented reality app experience that plays on the potential that the field of design has to offer when it comes to AR.  

He taught Unity workshops internationally as the one in Shanghai, “Urban Mixed Reality Environment” for DigitalFUTURES 2019 and published multiple articles about AR/VR on platforms such as DesignBoom, Archdaily and Forbes.

Now on to our sixth episode is a BIM Paraxis episode that has been curated by our BILT Academy correspondent Julia and her topic of decentralization, which was so big we needed two full episodes to cover it. (Part 1). In this month’s podcast, the second part will cover the practical side of the decentralization topic.

In 2017, Graham founded Digital Guerrilla Consultancy Ltd, Scotland’s 1^st Digital Information Management Consultancy, and is also an Associate Tutor and part of the Associate Consultancy Program at BSi delivering their BIM training courses across the UK and a part-time lecture at Glasgow Caledonian University.

Martin is an architect and head of technology at LivingRoomCraftZ in the Netherlands.  

Martin’s profound and in-depth knowledge of multi and interdisciplinary processes and technologies not only keeps him in demand at various educational institutes but as well in the field of practice. As a solution-oriented person, Martin seeks practical ways of solving problems. According to his credo: If the hammer is too small, take a bigger one. 

• John Egan CEO at BIMLauncher

John’s interest in the construction industry started from an early age thanks to his family’s sub-contractor business. He followed this dream and trained as an Architect in UWE, Bristol before his passion evolved to BIM and technology.  

Having built solutions for Hoare Lea in the UK focusing on efficient workflows, John co-founded his first startup in 2014; a technology focused BIM consulting business. Fast forward a few Research and Development focused years BIMLauncher was conceptualized; a company focused on delivering solutions to industry issues surrounding inefficient workflows between construction project management applications. John is also a co-founder of aecHive; an online innovation community platform, an active member of buildingSMART openCDE-API project and technical room lead for BuildingSMART UK and Ireland.

Now on to our fifth episode is a BIM Paraxis episode that has been curated by our BILT Academy correspondent Julia and her topic of decentralization is so big it will take two full episodes to cover. This month’s podcast is part 1 and will cover the theoretical and research side of the decentralization topic.

During Julia’s recent work on her graduation project for University, her attention and interest in web-based technology and especially to decentralization increased. This newfound interest lead to her read a book by Yuval Noah Harari, 21 Lessons for the 21st Century (if you aren’t a read you can check out the Talks at Google YouTube Video), in which the opportunities and risks that humans face when they use and rely heavily on unsecured common data environments and web-based platforms such as the Internet is highlighted.

After reading some articles about decentralization in other industries. she was wondered to what extend decentralization of data is already researched and applied in the building industry? She has identified a hand full of experts and academics researching this topic on behalf of all of us in the built environment. And that’s how everything started, and we ended up doing this 2 part podcast.

Although it appears to be such a futuristic topic in the building industry, it is again applied science in other industries, such as life-science or biochemistry. Which could inspire us to learn from others.  

For this episode, Julia will be interviewing 2 researchers on decentralizing data in the building industry.

• Mads Holten Rasmussen of NIRAS and a PhD in Linked Building Data.

Mads graduated with an MSc in Architectural Engineering from the Technical University of Denmark in 2013 and has since then been affiliated with the consulting engineering company, NIRAS. For the first three years, he was involved in the design and coordination of mechanical installations in the Axel Towers office house in central Copenhagen.  The predominantly manual handling of the extensive project material built up over the years and inspired him to research how it could be made smarter, which led him in the direction of the semantic web and linked data. In 2019 he defended his PhD in this subject and since then he has been working on applying the technologies.

• Jeroen Werbrouck a FWO researcher at Ghent University

Jeroen graduated in 2018 as an MSc in Engineering: Architecture at Ghent University, he participated in the Horizon2020 project BIM4Ren as a researcher at Rheinisch Westfälische Technische Hochschule (abbreviated RWTH) Aachen University. Simultaneously with his appointment as a researcher and lecturing assistant at Ghent University.  In late 2019, his PhD research proposal got accepted for funding by Flanders Research Foundation FWO, which has allowed him to work on the project on a daily basis up until today. His main research topic is the setup of infrastructure for data-based, federated building models, based on Semantic Web technologies. Within this context, Jeroen has worked on pattern-based access control in federated Web contexts the use of semantic query language validation of federated data and documenting existing buildings using Linked Data.

On Thursday, September 24th Episode Four of the BILT Academy Podcast went live.

Our fourth episode has been curated by our BILT Academy correspondent David. This month’s podcast is a technology podcast, and in it, David interviews four industry experts about the topic of Automation.

This month we explore the concept of automation within the construction industry. Over the last few years, automatization has increasingly made its way into our environment and has quickly been evolving in many ways. In order to better understand the future of automation in the AEC industry, we have interviewed a variety of experts, each with their own perspectives on automation. These perspectives range from automation in software engineering, data collection on construction sites, prefabrication and manufacturing. By asking them what automation looks like and who it’s useful for we hope to offer you the listeners an insight into the role of automation in the construction industry and how they come together to shape the future of the sector and our built environment. 

• Software deployment and automation with Gordon Price of Pragmatic Praxis.

Gordon is an Architect by education and has straddled the practice/technology fence since university. He has been at times a Job Captain, a CAD Manager, a BIM Manager & an IT Manager, including a stint in all three technology management roles for a firm of around 50 people, doing their first two Revit pilot projects. He thinks that may have been when the light really went on for him regarding automation. Now he spends his time writing and supporting the software tools he wished he had back then. 

• Robotics and construction site data collection with Brian Ringley of Boston Dynamics.

Brian is the Construction Technology Manager at Boston Dynamics where he supports AECOO customer applications for the Spot platform and promotes the development of new autonomous behaviour that adds value to construction project delivery. Prior to Boston Dynamics, he was a Senior Construction Automation Researcher at WeWork where he managed the construction robotics research program and contributed to initiatives in design automation and modular prefabrication. Previously he taught at the University of Cincinnati DAAP, City Tech, City College, and most recently at Pratt GAUD where he led seminars in computational fabrication and industrial robotics. 

• Concrete 3D printing and automation in manufacturing with Eric Barendse of Bruil

Eric is a computational designer and expert on large scale 3d printing in construction. Trained at the Design Academy Eindhoven. He has been involved in concrete printing since 2013. As a researcher at Bruil Prefab Printing, his professional focus is on industrializing this technology in connection with emerging architectural practice and workflows.

Our Third episode is a timely episode that has been curated by our BILT Academy correspondent Daniel. This month’s podcast is a Science and Academic podcast, and in it, Daniel interviews two industry experts about the topic of BIM at school

• The Pan-European difference in education BIM with Michael McGuire of New College Lanarkshire.

 Michael McGuire, an Architectural Technologist with 19 years’ experience in the design and delivery of Digital Construction education.  He is passionate about education as his students have twice won the WorldSkills UK National BIM competition and his college course just won the BIM Show Live, best BIM Training Programme! 

On the back of all this success, Michael was recently appointed as the Training Manager for the WorldSkills UK BIM Squad and is responsible for the training of team UK’s BIM competitors at WorldSkills in Shanghai in 2021 and since we held our last physical event in Scotland back in October 2019, we have continued to work closely with Michael and his colleagues at the New College Lanarskhire in Motherwell 

• The digitalization of education for the AEC industry with Martin Taurer of LivingRoomCraftZ. Martin is a recovering architect and head of technology at LivingRoomCraftZ in the Netherlands. Martin’s profound and in-depth knowledge of multi-interdisciplinary processes and technologies not only keeps him in demand as guest lecturer on prestigious universities throughout Europe, he also holds a permanent role at local faculties such as the Hanze with a focus on BIM methodologies.
